Global Release Day (alternatively known as New Music Fridays) is a new set international day for releasing of music singles and albums.
This move effectively ends the earlier phenomenon where new music was unavailable in one country when it was legally available elsewhere.

The Global Release Identifier (GRid) is a system to identify releases of digital sound recordings (and other digital data) for electronic distribution. It is designed to be integrated with identification systems deployed by key stakeholders from across the music industry.
Why is music released on Friday now?
Releasing on a Friday gives popular artists the best chance to maximize their chart potential. Billboard tracks sales from Friday to Thursday each week, so a song or album released on a Friday has the advantage of being tracked for all seven days of the weekly cycle.
