UPDATE: The shift to Fridays as the music industry’s global release day will begin on July 10th, according to Music Week.
Friday will be the new Tuesday beginning this summer, when the worldwide music industry begins putting out new releases on most music buyers’ paydays.
Why do albums come out on Fridays?
Releasing on a Friday gives popular artists the best chance to maximize their chart potential. Billboard tracks sales from Friday to Thursday each week, so a song or album released on a Friday has the advantage of being tracked for all seven days of the weekly cycle.

So, the recording industry, at least in the U.S., agreed upon a standard day, Tuesday, for music to be officially released. This Tuesday standard was not shared internationally, however. Music in the U.K. and Canada was released on Mondays, and in Australia and Germany, albums were released on Fridays.

3) Tuesday provides the biggest opportunity to maximize revenue. As mentioned, the first day is the biggest day. By making that day Tuesday the distributor can use a weekday (a non-shopping day) to make a big splash and then ride the wave to the weekend when people naturally come out to shop.
